Disabilities can happen to anyone, young or old, at anytime.  The Council for Disability Awareness reports that twenty-five percent of the today’s 20-year-olds will become disabled before they retire.
Disabilities happen from accidents but more often happen from health issues. Heart attacks, cancer and back injuries are among the major culprits.

Factors that increase the risk of becoming disabled:

  • Excess body weight
  • Tobacco use
  • High risk activities or behaviors
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Back pain
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Frequent alcohol consumption
  • Substance abuse

Factors that decrease the risk of becoming disabled:

  • Maintain a healthy body weight
  • Avoid tobacco use
  • Eat healthy
  • Get enough rest
  • Exercise regularly
  • Maintain healthy stress levels
  • Avoid high risk behaviors
  • Treat chronic health condition
