How Much Do You Have To Earn To Pay For Something

cost versus earnings

How much do you have to earn to purchase $40 of gas?

How much you have to earn depends on your tax bracket. A tax bracket chart is provided below for reference.

In this scenario, the 25% tax bracket is being used.  Assuming you are in the 25% tax bracket you would have had to earn $53.34 to purchase the $40.00 worth of gas.

To determine how much you have to earn to pay for something use this calculation:

Cost of item (including sales tax) $40.00
Divide the cost of the item by (1-Tax Rate) 25% in this example 1 – .25
Equals 40 / .75
Amount you had to earn before paying income taxes $53.34

To determine which tax bracket you are in, see chart below.

Tax rate Single (taxable income) Married, filing jointly (taxable income)
10% $0 to $9,275 $0 to $18,550
15% $9,275 to $37,650 $18,550 to $75,300
25% $37,650 to $91,150 $75,300 to $151,900
28% $91,150 to $190,150 $151,900 to $231,450
